Guzman, a political science and Spanish major, received $2,000. He plays on the CLU football team, is co-president of MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan) and served as an intern for CLU's Center for Equality and Justice. A Mexican immigrant who is the first in his family to attend college, he was awarded the College Summit Alumni Leader of the Year for his work with students with similar backgrounds.

CLA awarded eight scholarships totaling $13,750. The awards are given in recognition of the students’ community service, leadership potential and academic achievement.

The Community Leaders Association was founded in 1963 to stimulate the community's interest in the university’s academic, athletic and cultural programs. Members organize fundraising and social events throughout the year to support academic departments and student scholarships. The organization has provided more than $1.8 million through the years.
